TRIPPY FANTASY
DIGITAL PATTERN ARMCHAIR
FURNITURE DESIGN / GRAPHIC DESIGN
2022, Commercial Work at YEN TING CHO Studio
This armchair experiments with different ways a 2D pattern can interact with a 3D product. The design forms a dynamic flow visually, creating an optical illusion which draws viewers into a Trippy Fantasy. Although it is a static, inanimate object, its gravitas grabs people’s attention.

design for STUDIO exhibition space
As an object visible upon entry, it serves as a small corner for guests to relax and unwind while showcasing the brand's characteristics and technology.

CREATING 3-DIMENSIONALITY FROM 2D PATTERNS
As the main medium of the YEN TING CHO studio, we are constant printing our signature Digital Patterns onto various apparel pieces, including scarfs. These soft fabrics worn on the human body naturally creates sculptural forms and flow, which triggered us to ask: under the production constraint that our patterns can only be printed onto flat surfaces, how might we breakthrough this limitation and create a more dynamic design to bring another layer of dimensionality to the visual experience?
3D EXPLORATION VIA PAPER:
FLUIDITY, MOMENTUM, AND CONTINUITY

PATTERN SELECTION
From hundreds of Digital Patterns, I selected an array of patterns based on its visual flow; mostly determined by orientation, levels of contrast & color combination, providing a curated set for further design exploration.
MULTIPLICATION
LINEAR DISPLACEMENT
15° ROTATIONS
PATTERN PLACEMENT EXPLORATION AND ITERATION
Through further distortion of each single pattern matching with playful methods of multiplying the patterns onto spatial layers, a new visual flow with a new design language is created from the same graphical pattern.
ILLUSION OF A LIVING PATTERN
By having different pattern placement on either sides of the chair fin structure, a visual effect of the patterns moving is created as viewers' viewing points travel.
